Costa Rica, a land filled with the natural beauty of the tropics, where the climate is hospitable and pleasant all year, welcoming anyone with a love for nature. It is here a group of frontiersman, including our parents, settled with a vision of bringing the gospel to the local people.

As their vision became a reality and the community grew, they naturally turned their attention to the pressing realities of life in the tropics. The need became evident for a better economic situation for the local farmers whose lives revolve around their small parcels and limited resources.

Their attention turned to coffee, a great native commodity. Through research, they discovered the Arabica coffee grown in the tropical regions of Costa Rica to be among the best in the world. The climate, altitude, and good soil conditions, offer a unique environment that is perfect for the production of single origin coffee.

In the fall of the year 2000, we installed our first roaster in Grandview Texas, which gave us greater control over the quality of roast. We then started offering mail order. As our business grew, a dedicated search was made for a larger coffee mill to meet our needs. From this effort, an alliance was formed between javataza and CoopeAgri. CoopeAgri is a cooperative with years of experience and one of the most modern mills in Costa Rica. With this unique alliance, javataza is able to focus on the socioeconomic issues on Central America and become a stable supplier of coffee from 6 different regions in Costa Rica.

In 2006, we built a new coffee roasting and warehouse facility with a much larger profile roaster to accommodate our growth. Included in our new facility is the first javataza coffee shop to serve the local public and as a training center. We have taken our original farms in Costa Rica and formed them into one model farm called the “Lecona Farms,” making it one of the many model farms in the javataza/CoopeAgri alliance. This model has made javataza an accepted leader in the local communities of a growing group of tico farmers. This relationship has also created the infrastructure in Costa Rica needed for an increasing consistent supply of quality gourmet coffee needed for our customers in North America.

Traceability and sustainability are very important issues to javataza. Through the javataza/CoopeAgri alliance we are able to address these important issues. With hands on monitoring and communicating directly with the farmer, and by improving growing methods and working conditions, we are creating sustainable farms with continued opportunities to produce premium coffees.

The socioeconomics of the coffee regions around the globe are the primary issues that face javataza.
